Final Project!

My name is Courtney Sanders and the topic I chose for my blog project for Ms. Terrell is dream interpretations. The reason I chose dream interpretations as my topic is because I found it to be an interesting topic, plus it seemed like it would be fun to look into. The highlights of my blog are the interaction I did and my book. My interaction was interpreting my own dreams, which was fun to me. The book I read was also a highlight of my blog. The book was Wake and it was a good book, even though it was a slight confusing and strange. The things I would have done differently are to not have waited until the night before to do my blogs and interaction. Unfortunately when I waited to do my blogs it would cause them to be more difficult to do. I would have also chosen better sources and information because some I found to be boring. What I learned from this blog project on dream interpretations is that people can have the same dreams as another person, but no one realizes it. All dreams have some kind of meaning even if you do not think they do. I also learned that dreams are something that everyone experiences, even when they do not remember them. It does not matter if you say "I never dream" because in the end you do. My final opinion of my topic of dream interpretations is that dreams are still interesting to me because it is something that you have all the time. A person can dream of the same dream over and over again as time moves forward. I liked looking into this topic because it was something enjoyable and fun to learn about in me perspective. I would actually like to learn more on dreams because there are so many different interpretations for different dreams.

Death in a Dream

In the article "Death in a dream: Dream Dictionary and Dream Symbol Interpretations" is about death in dreams and how they relate to your everyday life. When dreaming and seeing your people dead, to warn you of becoming dissolute or sorrowed. If a family member or a friend call you in your dream to inform you that you lost someone, you will soon hear bad news in reality. "Dreams relating to death or dying, unless they are due to spiritual causes, are misleading and very confusing to the novice in dream lore when he attempts to interpret them" (Death Dreams). People normally think about their dreams all day trying to interpret them. During someone's dreams of death, there can be images of dying, dead, or their burial, and mistake it for their friends when its really theirs. A person may be warned of approaching conditions that will maintain the same until death itseld happens.
The article above helped with my topic because it deals with death dreams. Death dreams are the last dreams to interpret. This article is not a very good one, but it does give you information. In my opinion death should have to dream about. Dreams are scary especially when it comes to dreams about dying. This article only gives a few reasons for trying to interpret dreams about death.

Falling Dreams

The article "Dream Interpretation: Falling Dreams" by Jenni Kosarin, is about dreams of falling and their meanings for them. Dreams of falling can be referred to as a fallen woman, a fall of grace, or the fall season. Also, the dream can be refer to what might have happened to you within the twenty-four hours prior to the dream. An example is about a young married woman dreamed that she was falling from a building. Her metaphor is about her affair with a married man at her office. It did not just represent a fall from grace, she was afraid for her marriage if her husband found out. Sometimes dreams will have a certain "zing" to it, and you will automatically know the reference. Normally people need to take a dream apart piece by piece to understand the meaning. "Classic dream themes such as falling or taking a test don't qualify as archetypal because they're not forces within us" (Kosarin). They usually lie in our daily lives and experiences. A dream the therapist named Gayle Delaney suggests to everyone that you can ask yourself about: how you feel in your dreams when you are falling, do you feel terrified, do you feel helpless, do you feel out of control, or is it a sensation pleasant. A good strategy to help interpret your dreams is to write down everything you remember from your fallen dream; that will help you find meanings from dream dictionaries and the Internet.
The article above helped with my topic because it focuses on a certain type of dream and helps figure out the different variations of interpretations. Falling dreams are very common and when having them, your body has a reaction to what you see. When your body jumps and you wake up, it is because you witnessed a falling dream and they can be scary. Kosarin gives an example about the woman, but I do not see how that completely relates to falling dreams; therefore I think she could have used a better example than this one. Over all in my opinion the article was pretty helpful. If she would have put a little more information there, then I think the article would have been better and more fulfilling.

My Dream Journal #6

March 28, 2010

I had another nightmare about Michael Myers chasing my except this time I was all by myself. We were somewhere different that I had never been before. It was like the first Halloween movie; it was the white house that Jamie Lee Curtis was babysitting Tommy. I was Jamie! He popped out from behind the couch and then I woke up. I was so scared. I dream of Michael Myers a lot.

Interpretation: The interpretation of this dream could be that I am afraid of life. That something is always getting in my way of having fun and be careless. I think something is holding my back from moving forward. That is why I dream of him so much.

My Dream Journal #5

March 27, 2010

I had a dream about falling off a building. I do not know how I got up there. I do not know how I did not make myself quit. I did not understand why I started falling to begin with. Normally I jump when I have a falling dream, but this time I did not. I kept falling and falling and falling and just never quitting. I wanted to but could not.

Interpretation: Falling dreams are quit common in everyone. This dream could mean that I am insecure about myself. I am an overwhelmed person and I think that helped a lot in my dream. My interpretation could be that something is making me overwhelmed and dysfunctional.

March 24, 2010

I had a dream about hanging with my friend Chelsea. We were at her house talking about our prom situation. We were making numerous phone calls to the people in our group for prom. Everything was confusing, but I woke up. I also had another dream when I went back to sleep and I was with my family. We were all sitting around my grandmother's kitchen table. Everyone was actually there for the first time; I loved it. My alarm clock started going off and I woke up from the awesome dream.

Interpretation: I think I dreamt of this because I had talked to Chelsea earlier that evening about our prom situation. I look at this is way, that it could have a good outcome. That we would get a limo for prom and that everyone would be able to be in it. The second dream I had could have had a great outcome. I love that I was with my family and that could go wrong. The interpretation for this dream could be that my family should be more important in my life.

I had a dream about going to hang out with my friend at her house but when I got there...My friend Jasmine walked out. We were friends at my old school, but she was killed in a car accident when we were in the fourth grade. We were sitting at our friend Jessica's house and we were sitting there catching up on things that had happened since we went our separate ways. Jasmine had started talking about how Heaven was and how she was doing plus her mother. After that moment my alarm clock went off and my dream ended.

Interpretation: The interpretation coming from this dream could be that I miss my friends. I think it could also mean that I wish Jasmine could be here today. Jessica was my best friend at my old school and helped me through everything and then we moved and now we have lost contact. In my opinion I think she was my helper in life and now they are both gone.

I had a nightmare, which had the scariest person to me, Michael Myers. I dream of this and him a lot. He was following my friends and me around. Myers was just walking directly behind us; of course we ran. All of a sudden he disappeared. It was Taylor, Andrea, Chelsea, and Timothy just standing there looking all confused. Michael popped out from around the corner. I jumped wide awake, luckily it was morning and I had to get up anyway.

Interpretation: These types of dreams can occur several different times. In my opinion, I think I dream of Michael because he scares me and I watch his movies a lot. It is a thrill that I enjoy to do and have. I do not mind being freaked out by him; even if he scares me badly. I think that one day the dreams will end but I am not sure when. Maybe I have these dreams because I am afraid of stuff that could happen in my future.

My Dream Journal #2

February 13, 2010

I had a dream, but it was also like a nightmare in my eyes...but it actually turned into a premonition. I was in a deep REM sleep, but that sure was not long because of this dream. I was with my boyfriend at the time and we had been together for seven months and I knew I really cared about him. We were riding in his car heading towards my house after a fun night. He looked at me and said, "Courtney it is over." I started crying and the funny thing is I woke up crying as well. Then Tuesday, it had happened.

Interpretation: In my perspective, I think this dream meant that I could not trust him at all. It was a way to know that something was going to happen, but I just did not know what it would be and like. For instance I had a feeling before the dream every occured that something was going to happen but it was something I did not want to deal with. Then the dream happened and everything changed. I think that the dream was meant for a reason.

My Dream Jounal #1

February 4, 2010

My dream was about dancing. I was at Linda Dobbins Dance Studio and I was there by myself and Linda. I was in a deep training session. She had me doing turns after turns, jumps after jumps, and even sit-ups after sit-ups. Then all of a sudden my dream changed and I was on stage doing a dance solo in front of a full audience for a competition. All I know is that I felt like I was on top of the world and that nothing could go wrong. My dream ended on that note because my mom came in and woke me up.

Interpretation: My dream could mean several different things. It could possibly mean happiness and cheerful, it can mean that something good is going to happen in my future with dance. Dancing is my life and it can mean that I could make dance in college with this dream. I think this dream is going to be something good in my future.

Freudian Interpretation of Dreams

In the interpretation of dreams, Freud laid out a formula to help interpret dreams and their meanings. The formula could help interpret one of the most confusing dreams. Freud's theory relays on the sen sore part of the brain which edits the dreams you have. Sometimes the powerful emotions coming from dreams, would wake you during the night because the fulfillment could not be bearable. "The sen sore transforms the dream content to disguise it's true meaning" (Freudian Interpretation of Dreams). Freud called dreams a desire, dream work. There a number of processes like: displacement which shifts the emotion from one idea to another, condensation which fuses together multiple thoughts into a single symbol, and symbolization and projection where dream work components join together to change and redirect dream thoughts and images into acceptable forms. The name of a real dream is the latent dream.
In my opinion this video explain a lot of various things. For instance the processes of interpreting dreams, plus there meanings. The video could have used a little more information then what was given. I think this video can help you learn about dreams because Freud was one of the first people to learn about dreams and things surrounding them. Overall the video was good, but like I said there could have been some better parts where more information could have been used.

Wake

The book Wake by Lisa McMann, is a story about a young teenage girl named Janie Hannagan, who can be apart of people's dreams. The story takes place in and out of the many different dreams. Janie's first dream to encounter, was when she was eight years of age; of course it was someone else's. It happened to be Luke Drake's dream about being on the field playing football naked. Janie did not know what to think except what is happening, why me. The dreams that she kept being involved in started becoming weirder and weirder. Mrs. Hannagan was not a good mother because she never was around to help Janie, she was always to drunk. One day, while Janie was at school, a snobby girl, named Melinda Jeffers tripped Janie on her way to a seat on the bus. She arrives home and her mom is passed out on the couch and Janie instantly falls into her mom's dream.
Janie was introduced to a new girl next door named Carrie, who throughout the book maintains as Janie's best friend. Melinda Jeffers scoots her way into being best friends with Carrie. The funny thing is, Janie gets to be apart of Melinda's dream while being at Carrie's birthday party. As Janie got older, the more dreams she became apart of. On September 6, 2005, at seven thirty-five, Janie was on her way to school and came across Cabel Strumheller who was walking down the road, therefore, Janie told him to just pile into her car. They started becoming close friend, close enough for her to inform him of her biggest secret. The secret was about her being in other's dreams. Cabel, of course does not take it well at first but comes to his senses.
Janie works at the Heather Home for old people and Martha Stubin is a little old lady living there; they become really close. "Dear Janie, Thank you for my dreams. From one catcher to another, Martha Stubin, P.s. you have more power than you think" (129). Janie was planning on having a CAT scan to see what was causing this whole situation to occur. Cabel finally informs Janie that he is in love with her through one of his dreams; she remembers it when they wake up.
In my opinion I liked the book, it was easy to understand. Lisa used good imagery throughout the novel with all the different dreams Janie is involved in. For once a book kept me interested from start finish. I liked how Lisa threw in cliques, certain best friends, and even romance; it made the book more interesting. Wake is overall a good book, but you have to be a person to like confusing situations.
There are also negative things about the book. First is, I did not like how it jumped from different months and days all the time. While reading the book, I had to try and stay unconfused; which was hard, therefore I did not like that. There was also a lot of cussing that I found to be horrid. In my opinion, there should not have been so much fowl language for a book.

Interpretation of Dreams

In the chapter "Why Dream?" taken from The Interpretation of Dreams by Laurence M. Porter informs the readers about dreams and the different variety of interpretations. When a person's sleeping mind is awake, the dream will become more of a waking thought. "By saying that the mind has been temporarily crippled, it neatly avoids all the difficulties of trying to explain the inner contradictions and incoherence of dreams," (Porter). Regression and repression are the keys to Sigmund Freud's concept of the dreams. Porter emphasizes that we have all had immoral dreams. Immoral dreams can contain impulses repellent to our conscience; this shows that dreams have access to psychic material that happens to be absent from or minimal in the waking states of life. There are two rules of interpretation: the dreamer's associations to a dream should be considered as part of the dream and analyzed along with it; absurdity in a dream typically means that the dreamer is passing judgement on some situation that they find absurd (55).
The chapter above helps with my topic because it actually tells about the two different rules of dream interpretations. Porter has very good information to help, but some of the information seems to be repeated time and time again. I have always known their were immoral dreams but I never knew that everyone could have them. Sigmund Freud is the first person to ever interpret dreams; he has very good interpretations at that. This chapter gave details on Freud's achievements with dream interpretations, in which Porter used to help interpret his dreams and to help other interpret theirs. Porter does give some "gee-whiz" information that has nothing to do with dream interpretations as well as giving information about dreams that people already know.

Hidden Meaning of Dreams

In the video "The Hidden Meaning of Dreams" by Craig Hamilton Parker, who is psychic; he has written several books about dreams. "We all have a number of common dreams and for some reason they keep coming back time and time again," (Parker). Dreams never just end, they will always be there. You can learn about the unusal meanings and the psychological meanings of dreams. Plus you can also learn the spiritual meanings of your common dreams. People wonder if you can talk to the dead in your dreams; also premonitions for people seeing their future in their dreams as well.

The video helps understanding dreams and their meanings. I did not like how he was so boring while he was explaining everything. Parker did help with the psychic interpretations of dreams by letting the people know about the psychological and spiritual meanings. In my opinion, I think it is cool how dreams never just end, you could dream about the same exact thing for years and it never change. I think Craig could have used more information in his video that could have been more specific with greater details.

Introduction to Dream Interpretations

In the article "A Introduction to Dream Interpretation" by Michael Sheridan, helps to give good infromation about dreams and what lies beyond them. When sleeping, you can enter the world of dreams where it is magical, but yet times are horrifying. Sometimes you can enter in four to five times at night. Everyone has dreams and you cannot stop it. Learning to interpret dreams can help change someones life for the better. An example is about this guy named John, who dreamt that Van Morrison was sitting on the floor holding a pint of Guinness in his hand and arguing with his wife. In reality John and his wife were having an ongoing conflict; John was holding onto a childhood memory of his parents arguing with John sitting on the floor watching them. Dream analysis is not new. "As far back as the old Testament, Joseph showed us that dreams contain important messages. Native American cultures hold dreams in high regard as messages from the spirit world" (Sheridan). Dreams are a type of language of the soul. All aspects of our lives such as health, relationships, career, and spirituality in dreams. Health dreams have benefits; each person who dies of a heart attack or stroke has normally had several dreams alerting them of their fatal condition. Dreams can provide early warnings for health problems in the future. Relationship advice comes from dreams as well. Dreams will tell you if you are moving to fast in a new relationship. Your dreams can make you attentive to your partner's feelings. Career dreams can tell you when to apply for a promotion and if your going in the wrong career path. Spirituality dreams help with expression within open minds.

Michael Sheridan's article helps with my topic because he gives concrete details on what different dreams can stand for. Dreams come from past, present, and future adventures; which relates to my topic with understanding dreams. Dream interpretations that Sheridan portrayed such as: health, relationship advice, careers; and spirituality, helps people realize what they need to do in life. My only question is why do dreams have to be horrifying? Sheridan does not tell you why, just that they can be horrifying. I do like how some dreams can help with relationship advice because I have actually had a dream about my relationship falling apart and it did. Over all this article was pretty well written and easy to recieve the right interpretations that Michael was trying to put it out there for people.

Background on Dream Interpretations

Dreams can be baffling, bizarre, frightening, funny, or silly; sometimes they are all of them. Night time dramas seem to obtain messages, warnings, and symbolic tales. "Many people believed that dreams were baffling supernatural messages from gods and demons and that only shamans, oracles, and other religious soothsayers were skilled enough to interpret their meaning," (Kallen, 30). Since people believed that dreams were supernatural messages, they constructed numerous amounts of temples where people from all the different levels of society could go to have their dreams interpreted. Natural phenomenons, such as fire, water, weather, and animals were believed to partially be some of the meanings behind dreams. While some people use psychologists and psychiatrists to help analyze their dreams, millions of people actually interpreted their own dreams by using dream dictionaries.

The dream interpretations from above are related to my topic of dreams because when having dreams, you need to have a good understanding of what their meanings symbolize. For instances, the messages and signs coming from dreams can be warnings for you not to go to that certain location or hang out with the people that were in it. When focusing on your dreams, it can become very difficult to get the right interpretation for that dreams because there are so many. Egyptian men and Greek men have helped people to interpret their dreams by using temples for many citizens to go and study the picture for the variety of dreams. Interpretation of dreams is important for many reasons: understanding why you have certain people with you, why you are at that certain destination, why are these things happening to you within the dream, and why you have to relive something that has happened to you in the past or something that will happen to you in the future. However, you might never experience the things that happened in your dreams but there is that possibility that you will, a premonition.
